Many people in FAIRMED's projects live so remotely that they can only reach the nearest health facility by walking for miles. Here, where the journey to hospital often takes days, every birth becomes a risk for mother and child – and the mortality rate among mothers and newborns is correspondingly high.
To ensure that every woman can give birth safely, FAIRMED supports the establishment of birthing centers and health stations and equips them with essential medicines and equipment. Together with local governments, FAIRMED trains and educates local health professionals so that they can provide the best possible care for mothers and newborns.
This gives women living in remote villages the chance to give birth to their children in safety. Trained health professionals accompany them through pregnancy and childbirth, identify potential risks early on, and can intervene to save lives.
Knowledge transfer is crucial
In addition, women learn in so-called mothers' groups how important preventive medical checkups and medically supervised births are – they also find a safe space to share experiences, ask questions, and learn from each other. They support each other and gain confidence.
The groups are usually led by FAIRMED health workers, who provide sensitive support to the women: they show them how to care for newborns properly, explain how to recognize complications, and give them confidence. Step by step, not only does their knowledge grow, but so does their confidence – and the chance of a healthy life for mothers and children.
