Working together for the health of people with disabilities

Worldwide, one in six people live with a disability and are often discriminated against when it comes to access to healthcare. They are three times more likely to be denied healthcare and four times more likely to be treated poorly in healthcare facilities. That is why more than 20 organizations - including FAIRMED - are calling on governments and the international community to commit to equal health opportunities for people with disabilities.

This demand - initiated by the International Disability and Development Consortium (IDDC) - was recently launched at the Global Disability Summit (GDS) in Berlin. It includes a commitment by national governments and local authorities to develop and implement strategies to ensure that all health services for people with disabilities are accessible, affordable and of high quality. It also calls on the international community to prioritize the inclusion of persons with disabilities in all health investments.

A look at the figures shows just how important this is: An estimated 1.3 billion people are affected by disability. People with disabilities have a mortality rate that is 2.4 times higher and a life expectancy that is 10 to 20 years lower than people without disabilities - this inequality is exacerbated by poverty. FAIRMED is therefore committed to helping people with disabilities. In our projects, we support them medically and with aids, raise their awareness of their rights, inform them about the government benefits they are entitled to and work to ensure that they receive them and can exercise and claim their rights.
