At FAIRMED, we work in some of the most challenging regions of the world, where many people still do not have access to quality healthcare. Implementation research helps us understand why healthcare services often do not reach the people who need them most. Together with local communities and partners, we identify barriers and develop solutions that are adapted to the specific circumstances. In this way, we connect scientific knowledge with on-the-ground experiences and ensure that health measures are not only well-planned but also effectively implemented.

This involves central questions: Why is a measure successful in one region but not in another? What prevents people from seeking medical help or continuing treatment? Which stakeholders promote change and who is excluded so far?

By systematically examining these challenges, implementation research enables FAIRMED to further develop programs, strengthen health systems, and make access to healthcare more equitable. In short: it helps us move from assumptions to facts and understand what really drives changes. This leads to solutions that work – sustainably, in line with needs, and where they are needed most.

Our implementation research is:

• Community-oriented: Affected communities and local partners actively develop solutions. This strengthens self-responsibility and promotes mutual learning, transparency, and shared benefits, while avoiding exploitative research practices.

• Interdisciplinary: Implementation challenges are shaped by social, cultural, economic, and environmental factors. Our research integrates various disciplines and adapts methods to local conditions.

• Action-oriented: The insights flow directly into program design, improving service delivery and quality and strengthening health systems.

• Equity-focused: We prioritize the needs and voices of marginalized populations, ensuring that measures are inclusive and contribute to social justice.

We apply implementation research in various fields, including:

• Neglected tropical diseases (NTDs)

• Maternal and child health

• Health systems in conflict and crisis areas

• Climate change and health

• Social inclusion, particularly in the area of Disability, gender equality, and youth

Together with various partners, FAIRMED participates in scientific studies or undertakes the implementation of research projects.
