The neglected tropical disease Dengue is spreading more and more worldwide. Especially in regions with weak healthcare systems, the consequences can be severe, particularly for infants and children. A Dengue infection often manifests with high fever and severe headaches, muscle, bone, and joint pain. Many affected recover after a few days. However, in severe cases, the disease can lead to life-threatening complications – especially if no timely medical treatment is available.
FAIRMED’s efforts against Dengue
In our projects, we therefore rely on regular measures for education, prevention, and quick assistance in emergencies. Our local health workers go door to door, informing the population about symptoms, treatment options, and protective measures, and help to detect cases of illness early. And during outbreaks, we react quickly: We produce information materials such as radio spots, posters, flyers, and brochures and distribute them in the affected areas.
Here are a few images of the info materials and how we raise awareness among people:
At the same time, we support authorities, police, and the army in locating and eliminating breeding grounds of the transmitting mosquitoes. Mosquitoes particularly often breed in standing water – for instance in water barrels, puddles, or old car tires.
Medical care also plays an important role. FAIRMED supports healthcare facilities in treating infected people early on and preventing severe courses of the disease. That FAIRMED can act quickly during Dengue outbreaks is thanks to the long-term commitment in the project regions. Over decades, we have built a strong network of local health workers who know their communities and enjoy the trust of the people. Together with our over 60 years of experience in fighting neglected tropical diseases, we can quickly implement effective measures and provide targeted support to those affected.
