Why we are needed
Poor health care coupled with often inadequate access to drinking water and sanitary facilities means that neglected tropical diseases such as leprosy and leishmaniasis find a fertile breeding ground in the Pollonaruwa district. Many people here live with disabilities caused by diseases such as leprosy, birth or accidents. As they often live far away from the nearest health center, they do not receive the treatment they need.
«Compassion»
As is usual for FAIRMED, this project was also named by the local people. “Divisarana” literally means “compassion” and shows what the most neglected people want more than anything else.
How we work
We are taking far-reaching measures to stop the spread of neglected tropical diseases - mainly leprosy. In addition to the fight against NTDs, we provide people with disabilities with access to psychological support and medical care. Among other things, we train and educate government health workers in the special needs of people with disabilities. We ensure that those affected are cared for by specialist staff at home and do not have to make the long journey to hospital for their treatment and rehabilitation. We also provide those affected with the necessary aids, for example wheelchairs, ramps for their homes or toilets suitable for the disabled. We are also committed to helping them cope better with their disability and regain a foothold in society. And we support them in passing on this knowledge to other people with disabilities in their community.
