FAIRMED operates in Nepal within the provinces of Bagmati, Koshi, Madhesh, Lumbini, and Gandaki in 10 districts and 112 municipalities. Our projects range from the mountainous landscapes of Sindhupalchowk to the lowlands in Lumbini near the border with India.

FAIRMED identifies and removes obstacles that women face in accessing health services, information, and participation opportunities. We promote the self-determination and leadership role of women within the communities and also within our organization.

Nepal is one of the countries regularly affected by natural disasters such as earthquakes, floods, and disease outbreaks like dengue . For affected families, such crises often mean the loss of their livelihoods – and without functioning healthcare, they can quickly become life-threatening.

That is why FAIRMED combines long-term development cooperation with humanitarian aid. Together with the communities, we strengthen their ability to prepare for crises, recognize risks early, and act quickly in emergencies. We achieve this thanks to, among other things, our local staff. They live close to the affected areas and can respond to new challenges within a few hours. They do not need to travel from far away, but are already on-site. They are also well-connected with local authorities and know how to organize food, clothing, and medicines.

This creates resilient healthcare systems that provide security and hope to people not only in everyday life but also in the most challenging moments.

In Nepal, the neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) lymphatic filariasis, leprosy, visceral leishmaniasis (Kala-Azar), dengue fever , and trachoma are prevalent. Moreover, the NTDs rabies and echinococcosis occur locally and rather rarely.

As corruption can occur at the local government level, FAIRMED operates its own country offices in all project countries and directly controls the flow of funds there. Funds never go to governments but exclusively to carefully selected local staff. Cooperation with partners is clearly defined during project planning – including responsibilities and funding sources.

Strict monitoring and external audits ensure that irregularities and deviations in our project activities and their financing are noticed. In addition, FAIRMED implements anti-corruption programs, conducts risk analyses, and provides transparency with reporting systems in Nepal and all project countries.

For decades, FAIRMED has worked closely with the government in Nepal to sustainably strengthen the healthcare system. We support the authorities in overseeing and coordinating health services, analyze challenges in service delivery together, and collaboratively develop effective, needs-based, and locally adapted solutions. This helps ensure that health services are better coordinated and that even remote populations have access to high-quality care.
